Whereas the collection of the Gameboard Corridor displays a wealth of intriguing and diverse visual languages, appears the genre of contemporary game design to orient towards an overly unambigious visual language. Fantasy and imagination are being outcasted in favour of pictorial realism; wherein figurative monsters are rendered in detailed precision and the landscapes previously suggested by means of abstract figures, shown with photorealistic accuracy. From a critical position, the various workshops by interactive design studio Moniker serve as an exploration of visual possibilities of simple forms, instructions and interactions. These experiments come together in these pages that simultaneously provide an account for the visual impact and flexibility of effectively designed abstraction.
